NEWS // Jayson Belt – ‘Poor Penmanship’ – Producer Notes

February 5, 2015 by jhartry

There’s something very special about making music with a good friend, someone you’ve clocked in a lot of time with.   There’s a trust that’s established that frees you up to just do what you do, to create with no need to explain yourself, or worry if the other person gets it or not.   There’s a camaraderie that’s established where it’s been proven you have each other’s back.  You can push each other to do better work because of the history you have and the friendship you’ve built.   These are my favorite records to make, and that’s what I have with Jayson Belt.

Jayson Belt - Bobby HartryWe’ve performed, written, and recorded music together for years now.   The culmination of this time is an ease and freedom in working together.  Rarely does anything need to be explained or talked through.  We just start writing, or playing, or tracking. It’s easy.

“Poor Penmanship” – Jayson’s debut solo album, is a reflection of that relationship.   It’s a record that’s been in the works for a long time.  It’s been put on the back burner a few times as life has brought different twists and turns – career changes, kids, moves, etc.   But, it’s finally done and I think it’s a better record because of the wait.

A couple of thoughts about Jayson Belt…
Jayson is a power house of a vocalist, which is demonstrated on this record at times.  But, what also is displayed are the more subtle textures of his vocal which deliver some of my favorite moments, such as “Adriatic”.
He is one of the most gifted lyricists I know.  He can bring so much sarcasm and bite in a turn of phrase that you can’t help but laugh.  He can emote in a subtle way without hitting you over the head.  I’ve always marveled at how quickly he can pen a lyric to evoke just the right feeling.

Because of the span of time that this record was written and recorded over, we were a little concerned about how it would all fit together.   But, listening to it now, it makes perfect sense to me.  It reflects that span of time in it’s diversity and various influences, which I think brings interest to the record as a whole.  It’s certainly a record I’m proud of from the songs to the performances, to its production and mixes. Making music with friends is one of things that I value most in this life and this record is certainly an example and a tribute to that.

-Bobby Hartry

SHOWS/ We Still Crave the Live Experience

February 9, 2013 by jhartry

There is something about a live show…the moment when the musicians pick up their instruments and play the first notes…the anticipation as the lead singer steps up to the mic…and the sound that begins to pour out from the stage…its that very moment, standing next to friends, listening, watching, and sharing in that unique space in time…its just magical.

We’ve been going to shows since we were teenagers. Shows are our happy place. Anything from the big epic concerts, ala U2, to an intimate acoustic set at Largo…it doesn’t matter, they are all exciting and special.  They spark our imagination and fuel our emotions. Even today, when digital streaming is constant, and online access to music has created a thin and solitary listening culture, we all still crave the live experience.  And for the musicians, its the danger and risk of stepping out, expressing something for others to see and hear. Its a vulnerable act, sharing each song for others to critique. And its a thrilling act, to be in sync with the audience, to feel their support and energy as the show is experienced together…

ahh…we love live shows!!

And on that note, we’ve got some great shows coming up over the next month in LA and Nashville…see below for calendar. Of course, Moxi‘s Album Release Show is tonight at The Hotel Cafe, 10pm. AND…Casey Black is playing at The Bluebird Cafe tomorrow night!!!
Check out your local listings for artists performing near you…take a night out, grab some friends and enjoy some music together!

Casey Black – NYC to Nashville

July 12, 2012 by jhartry

We’re here, at CatBeach Studios, in Los Angeles, working ourselves to the bone on Casey Black’s new full-length album. By ‘working ourselves to the bone’, we mean, achieving the perfect clap-tones, scheduling our favorite pedal steel wizard, and stacking octaves of bgv’s. Oh and did we mention trumpets…we need trumpets!!

While we keep ourselves busy with these complicated details, Casey is back in the big city for his final summer as a resident of the fine state of New York. He and his lovely, Mrs. Molly Black, are packing up their household and moving it down to Nashville for a new adventure (adventure…so unusual for these two…). But before their grand farewell takes place, Casey is going to play a couple shows that seriously, you don’t want to miss. I’m not just saying this. If you saw him play last month at our party, you know what I’m saying. This guy has some mean songs to share….like some jaw-dropping songs…

So check it out. If you are anywhere near NYC in the next couple of weeks, here are your assignments:
1. Find air-conditioning. ‘Cause c’mon…NYC in the middle of summer!? bleh.
2. GO to the Big City Folk Festival at the  on Sunday, July 22. The day will be filled with the fine artists who make up the Big City Folk Collective. ‘What is the Big City Collective’ -you ask? Check it out here: VZ Magazine – Big City Folk Collective.
3. GO to The Living Room on Wednesday, July 25 at 7pm. ‘Nuff said. Just Go.
4. Find air-conditioning. Stay there until the summer passes.
For those of you who do make it out to one of these shows…we are really really really jealous of you. We sorta hate you. We are currently looking online for ‘blue-light-special’ on flights.

Any benefactors with a private jet out there? …Anyone??
