
Casey Black’s Five Faves
The fine Irish music blog, wearenoise.com, asked Casey Black to say some things about his five favorite songs. So, he was quite happy to go on and on about his choices…
“It’s a little embarrassing to make a list of my favorite five songs available to the public, as it points to something I’ve always been a bit ashamed of, both as a songwriter and a human being, which is the fact that I listen to a very limited and narrow bit of music. On my list there are no bands, no dead people, nobody that isn’t white or American, nobody that can’t be squeezed into the genre of singer songwriter. It’s evident from the list, too, that my opinion of what makes a song great is based almost entirely on a single aspect, which is the lyric. To my shame and chagrin, I have never been able to really love a song unless the lyric is saying something new, or moving, or daring, or unsettling, or, most of all, true. All that shameful stuff said, I know many fine people with fine ears, professional musicians included, who claim that they can’t quote one lyrical line from their favorite songs, as their ears are concerned with other parts of a song. On one hand I envy these people, because I’m sure that being loose or ignorant with lyrics allows them to enjoy a wider variety of music than I do. Casey is heading back over to play the Gealach Gorm Singer Songwriter Festival in the village of Kill, in County Waterford Ireland in April. He’s very excited about it, as is Ireland!
