NEWS // Jayson Belt – ‘Poor Penmanship’ – Producer Notes

February 5, 2015 by jhartry

There’s something very special about making music with a good friend, someone you’ve clocked in a lot of time with.   There’s a trust that’s established that frees you up to just do what you do, to create with no need to explain yourself, or worry if the other person gets it or not.   There’s a camaraderie that’s established where it’s been proven you have each other’s back.  You can push each other to do better work because of the history you have and the friendship you’ve built.   These are my favorite records to make, and that’s what I have with Jayson Belt.

Jayson Belt - Bobby HartryWe’ve performed, written, and recorded music together for years now.   The culmination of this time is an ease and freedom in working together.  Rarely does anything need to be explained or talked through.  We just start writing, or playing, or tracking. It’s easy.

“Poor Penmanship” – Jayson’s debut solo album, is a reflection of that relationship.   It’s a record that’s been in the works for a long time.  It’s been put on the back burner a few times as life has brought different twists and turns – career changes, kids, moves, etc.   But, it’s finally done and I think it’s a better record because of the wait.

A couple of thoughts about Jayson Belt…
Jayson is a power house of a vocalist, which is demonstrated on this record at times.  But, what also is displayed are the more subtle textures of his vocal which deliver some of my favorite moments, such as “Adriatic”.
He is one of the most gifted lyricists I know.  He can bring so much sarcasm and bite in a turn of phrase that you can’t help but laugh.  He can emote in a subtle way without hitting you over the head.  I’ve always marveled at how quickly he can pen a lyric to evoke just the right feeling.

Because of the span of time that this record was written and recorded over, we were a little concerned about how it would all fit together.   But, listening to it now, it makes perfect sense to me.  It reflects that span of time in it’s diversity and various influences, which I think brings interest to the record as a whole.  It’s certainly a record I’m proud of from the songs to the performances, to its production and mixes. Making music with friends is one of things that I value most in this life and this record is certainly an example and a tribute to that.

October 17, 2013 by jhartry

Tonight is the night!
A night to celebrate Ryan Webster’s debut album, The Point Of Pointlessness-which came out this week!!!
A night to hear some great music.
A night to be with great friends.

Tonight’s party will feature singer-songwriter Ryan Webster and his band and songs off of his new album – a 10-song ‘retro-funky-rock’ expression filled with existential angst, peppered with reprieves in moments of Americana and folk.  Along with many of the players from the project, Ryan will perform the album in its entirety, illustrating the beauty in this complete musical experience. There will also be performances by Pearls & Swine, Jayson Belt and Moxi, and the party will feature jewelry from the socially conscious company, 31 Bits.

The party will be at Hollywood’s House of Blues on the Sunset Strip in their exclusive Foundation Room, on Thursday, October 17. Doors are at 6:30, with the first band starting at 7pm. This event is free.

‘The Point’ consists of 10 original songs, written by Ryan Webster – whose songs have been featured on Revenge, Ghost Whisperer and other network TV shows. ‘The Point’ was  produced by Emmy-award winning songwriter-producer, Bobby Hartry who enlisted some of LA’s finest musicians, including Aaron Sterling on drums (John Mayer, Civil Wars, Glen Campbell), Jonathan Ahrens on bass (Jewel, Jason Mraz), and Greg Liesz on pedal steel (Ray LaMontagne, Wilco, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Iver). The album is available worldwide on-line via iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, and e-Music. And you can pick hi res downloads, cps, and vinyl on Ryan’s website store: www.ryanwebstermusic.com.

NEWS // CatBeach Music Loves Us Some 31 Bits

October 14, 2013 by jhartry

31 Bits is a global business, headquartered in SoCal, using fashion and design to empower women to rise above poverty.

They work with over 120 women in Gulu, Uganda,  purchasing jewelry from each woman on a monthly basis, providing them with an immediate, consistent, and fair income. Each piece of jewelry is handmade using 100% recycled paper and other local materials. By selling these products in the international market, they are able to generate a profit that is used to continue purchasing jewelry, as well provide the ladies with numerous development programs, including English and reading lessons, finance training, and vocational training, equipping them to develop a career and attain social equity on a local level.  And each of these women have beautiful and unique stories of suffering that has been overcome with joy and liberation.

This amazing company was started by Kallie Dovel and a few of her friends after getting a first hand look at life in Uganda in 2008. On her first trip to Northern Uganda, Kallie met women making paper beads but who lacked a plan to market and sell them. After spending time in their homes and hearing their stories, Kallie knew there had to be a way to give opportunities to her new friends. She brought a box of jewelry back to the U.S., and spent the next year finishing her degree and dreaming up the concept of a development organization. She brought a few friends on board and her ideas quickly evolved into 31 Bits. And now, they have a thriving business selling beautiful jewelry  working with these amazing women. These girls are world changers and we just love them!

This is truly Fashion for Good! Please help support our friends and their incredible company…
