Los Angeles based singer-songwriter, Anna Moon, is embarking on her own journey. Previously the front woman of the dream pop band Moxi, she is now branching out on her own, releasing her first solo record in over a decade. With a stripped down approach, tapping into the emotional landscapes of each song, Anna brings us Psychic Visions, a 5-song EP filled with deeply personal songs set for release on Friday, October 21.
Growing up in Littleton, CO, Anna started writing songs after being gifted her first guitar at 14 years old. “Littleton in the 90’s particularly had an entire vibe of its own,” Anna shares, “It’s hard to even explain it unless you were there but the music on this EP is heavily influenced by that.” It’s a town with equally gorgeous nature right in your backyard, but there’s also a darker undercurrent and heaviness to it. “There’s kind of this expansive open feeling to it because there’s so much space but it feels a little haunting at the same time,” explains Anna. “There’s this park near my childhood home that has this huge tree on top of a hill that my sister and I would go to all the time, and if the record could look like something it would be that park in the winter.”
After leaving Littleton, Anna made her way to Los Angeles where she has found the space to be able to go back to herself. “Los Angeles has influenced my music equally but in a much different way,” Anna discloses, “I feel like the roots of it are in Littleton and where I come from but Los Angeles has shaped the way it’s grown and evolved into what it is now.” Living in LA kickstarted a healing journey that has since led Anna to tap into her authentic self.
Having broken into the indie music scene as a member of Moxi, Anna stears away from the electronic-driven sound of her previous band in this new endeavor. Psychic Visions is an in-depth exploration of her childhood. “It’s a dreamy, pieced together, blurry offering of my experience growing up as a highly sensitive, artistic child,” Anna shares. “The songs give a glimpse into my formative years and include some of my first memories, an honest reflection of me as an adult starting to really understand how these early experiences shaped my whole life up until now. The songs tell stories of generational trauma, grief, abuse, mental health struggles, & how we can only love others as much as we love ourselves.”
Leading with the title track as the first single, “Psychic Visions,” Anna showcases exactly what to expect from this new project. The song is a blurry dreamstate offering of her experience growing up as a highly sensitive, artistic child giving us an indelible glimpse into the emotional landscape of the EP to come. “Psychic Visions” is a lyrical depiction of her childhood. It sheds candlelight on the stories of generational trauma, grief, abuse, mental health struggles, and how we as humans can only love others as much as we love ourselves, all woven into the fabric of this record.
The second single, “Holy Water,” is Anna’s account of an abusive relationship she witnessed her mother go through. “It’s probably my favorite song on the EP,” she admits. “I’m so proud of it. And I’m proud of the message it holds. It’s my small contribution to the discussion on the power of women.” Touching on the role women play in society and how they’re breaking free, both individually and collectively. Channeling the experiences of the women in her life, Anna floats through the song with honest conviction and the influence of the growth she’s endured.
“We can’t really heal until we find the root of the problem and take a good hard look at it. I suppose that’s what these songs are: they are truly me: honest, vulnerable, coming back to myself, and splayed out for everyone to see,” she admits, “Which feels terrifying and beautiful all at once. And so I give this record to the world now and celebrate that I no longer live in those spaces of fear, trauma, or outdated programming.” Laced with unabashed sincerity, Psychic Visions is a raw embodiment of Anna’s voyage through healing, acceptance and growth.
