fielding, a critically acclaimed indie folk band, have carved their own unique niche in the amply talented Southern California music scene, since 2004. Featuring the songsmithing of frontman, Eric Fielding Balmer, pared with multi-instrumentalist, Beth Balmer, fielding is back at it with a new 6-song project to be released in Fall 2012.
CatBeach Music is excited to share a steady collection of quality music from our friend-roster of topline artists. Here’s a brief update on what we’re up to….
Our first release, Daena Jay’s EP “When The Bough Breaks” will be closely followed up with a second Daena Jay collection. Bobby is currently in the studio working on a new project with local Long Beach faves, fielding, and is in production on acclaimed songwriter, Casey Black’sfourth full-length album “Lay You In The Loam.” Next up, we are super happy to announce that we’ve been working with SoCal’s darling, Anna Nelson, on her first full length LP. Listen for these new releases beginning in Fall 2012.
We’ve also just officially inked plans to record with Jayson Belt. And by inked, we mean on a napkin, over drinks at our fave, The Manhattan Beach Post. Sounds official to us!!!
We’ve got a few more things up our sleeves…but that’s all we’re sayen for now.
We’re here, at CatBeach Studios, in Los Angeles, working ourselves to the bone on Casey Black’s new full-length album. By ‘working ourselves to the bone’, we mean, achieving the perfect clap-tones, scheduling our favorite pedal steel wizard, and stacking octaves of bgv’s. Oh and did we mention trumpets…we need trumpets!!
While we keep ourselves busy with these complicated details, Casey is back in the big city for his final summer as a resident of the fine state of New York. He and his lovely, Mrs. Molly Black, are packing up their household and moving it down to Nashville for a new adventure (adventure…so unusual for these two…). But before their grand farewell takes place, Casey is going to play a couple shows that seriously, you don’t want to miss. I’m not just saying this. If you saw him play last month at our party, you know what I’m saying. This guy has some mean songs to share….like some jaw-dropping songs…
So check it out. If you are anywhere near NYC in the next couple of weeks, here are your assignments:
1. Find air-conditioning. ‘Cause c’mon…NYC in the middle of summer!? bleh.
2. GO to the Big City Folk Festival at the on Sunday, July 22. The day will be filled with the fine artists who make up the Big City Folk Collective. ‘What is the Big City Collective’ -you ask? Check it out here: VZ Magazine – Big City Folk Collective.
3. GO to The Living Room on Wednesday, July 25 at 7pm. ‘Nuff said. Just Go.
4. Find air-conditioning. Stay there until the summer passes.
For those of you who do make it out to one of these shows…we are really really really jealous of you. We sorta hate you. We are currently looking online for ‘blue-light-special’ on flights.
Any benefactors with a private jet out there? …Anyone??
Notes:Casey will be playing with a band in what may be his last big show here in New York before moving to Nashville. The very wonderful Michele Riganese, along with her very wonderful band will be up after me. It will be a very wonderful evening.
Oh what a night! Last week we gathered some of our pals and besties for a night of yummy food, happy drinks and featuring the finest of music, ala Casey Black and Anna Nelson. They each played some yet to be released tunes as well as some fan faves.
We also celebrated our own Bobby Hartry’s Emmy win for Best Original Song!
There was a cake. A boa. A trophy.
And there was even a speech.
Third time is indeed a charm! This was the third year that Bobby was nominated for an Emmy award for his music. This nom went out for a song called ‘Dust’, that he wrote with his fantastically talented friend Ben West.
The award ceremony happened to be on Father’s Day, so we all decided to hang out with our Dads in lieu of attending the banquet. After a very fun day of honoring the papas, we sat down for a late night check on the Emmy website which gave us the grand announcement that they had won!
Since we missed out on the glamour of the event, we decided to look back at last year’s Emmy banquet…
And here is Bobby with his great friends Sylvia and Jennifer from Fifth Floor Music:
It was a full house at CatBeach Studio last week. We had Eric and Beth Balmer from ‘fielding’, in for the initial tracking on their new ep. Aaron Sterling and Jonathan Ahrens came in to provide the foundation. Pocket anyone!? Lyle and Phoebe were on hand for cuteness and comic relief….although, we’re not sure Beth appreciates their talents!
Daena Jay was also in the studio for a writing session with Bobby. They gave the harmonium a little test drive too!
All in all it was a great week…so we thought we’d share a little. Thanks to our little FlipCam and iPhones, we’ve officially become very amateur lo-fi video editors. Some of our friends (who are very professional film and television editors) will be so proud…or…not…
Well, we’re having fun anyway!!
This month we head into the studio with Long Beach-locals, Fielding, to record a new EP. These new songs will follow up their full length (genius) record, The Voice Of Us. Trust us, you want this record! Check it out here…
And if that weren’t enough, we’ve got Casey Black coming out from Brooklyn to record with Bobby and Co. in June. This Casey is a seriously amazing songwriter…and we are thrilled to get him in the studio. Take a listen to some previous Casey action.
Daena Jay’s new release, a 5-song EP titled ‘When The Bough Breaks’, produced and engineered by Bobby Hartry, is a richly layered collection – painting melancholic pictures in tension with playful overtones and melodies.
The first release, ‘Wishful Thinking’ is an ironic tale of hope and fateful reality, set to an epic and haunting soundtrack.
